Raasay Primary School

As a follow on from the recent ceilidh in the hall for Alzheimer’s Scotland which the pupils attended and performed at, the boys were invited on wednesday 20th November to take part in an online ceilidh organised by Diane from Alzheimer’s Scotland in Portree.

The children performed their own school song ‘Tobhta Fearna’ which went down well with all the Gaelic speaking residents of the Care Home. The children also sang ‘Calum’s Road’ which they learnt last term and which they sang for the filming of ‘The One Show’. This was an opportunity to make a difference while taking part in an inter-generational event. This is an example and reflection of our school values and the importance of always caring which is at the heart of our aims as a school.

Nursery pupils were busy this week making Christmas pictures to make into Christmas cards. We think they did a great job!

As part of this year’s fundraising and the pupils’ ACORNS Enterprise work, pupils organised a fun ‘Games Afternoon’ for Monday 18th November. The boys had worked out which games to have as part of the event and these included: Human Fruit Machine, Darts, Sprout Racing, Maths Bingo and Play Your Cards Right. There were some fantastic prizes and vouchers on offer for the winners. Everyone who attended had a fantastic and very enjoyable afternoon and complimented the boys on their organisation and thought which went into the event.

This was such a success that this is something that we would like to repeat in the future.

The Afternoon Tea event on Saturday 16th November was organised by the Parent Council and was a collaborative event with Seall, who were performing at the Hall that day as part of the ‘Small Halls’ events.

The day was a huge success with people enjoying the fantastic cakes and refreshments on offer at the Parent Council Cafe, whilst also able to enjoy an afternoon of music. Raasay Primary pupils were on hand with raffles, school calendars; and their 100 squares with amazing prizes on offer, thanks to all the businesses and groups who support us.

A huge thank you to all involved – from donations of prizes, support for our calendar to baking and attending on the day.

Pupils in Raasay Primary School took part in the annual Children in Need event and dressed in colourful, non-uniform clothingfor the day. They designed their own Children in Need t-shirts, learnt key information about the charity – why it was set up, why Pudsey is called Pudsey and who it helps.

They raised £30 for Children in Need which has been sent off to the charity. Well done boys!

Some spooky goings on in Raasay Primary School and Nursery as pupils enjoyed their fun Hallowe’en party! We hope they didn’t give you a fright on their trip round the village later on…

A huge thank you to all those who donated to our Blythswood Shoebox Appeal. The boys have been very busy filling boxes with lovely items to be distributed by the charity. The boys all took time and thought to prepare boxes with items suitable for each age group. We also had lots of leftover items which will also be sent to the charity for them to include in other boxes or distribute as they wish.

This year the boys completed 14 boxes and your help with this is much appreciated.

Pupils in the upper school have been working with Sarah Ross, Active Schools Co-ordinator over several sessions to develop their Young Leadership skills. The boys had to learn how to teach the Nursery pupils to use balance bikes and help them develop their skills in this area. On Tuesday 29th October, Sarah led an all day workshop at the hall with the Young Leadership skills in the morning and a variety of indoor games for the older pupils in the afternoon. The older boys showed fantastic skills in leading the session where they helped the Nursery pupils with their sense of balance. They started with the Nursery pupils sitting and shuffling along the beam and leaning to each side then moving on to holding the bike as they pushed it along before sitting on the bike and gradually balancing. The boys then developed the session by showing techniques of stopping safely and cornering.

After the balance bike training the older boys showed initiative in improvising a fun games session using some of the sports equipment. They kept the Nursery pupils engaged and involved at all times. Well done boys!

In the afternoon, Sarah took the opportunity to introduce some alternative indoor games which are suitable for small groups like ours such as: indoor curling, indoor golf and Boccia (this is a type of bowls game which is often used in para sports as it is inclusive and can be played sitting down).

Pupils in Nursery and School joined together to celebrate their successes over Term 1. Our Nursery pupils received their first certificate from Nursery recognising and celebrating how well they have all settled in to Nursery routines. Our Nursery pupils are always smiling and, as you can see from the photo, they were delighted with the award. A big well done to them! Pupils in our Primary class have had a very busy term with lots of learning and achievement discussed and recognised at Assembly. All the boys received a certificate for their individual achievements within specific areas of the curriculum in which they had excelled over this term. We hope they all have a lovely October break and we look forward to welcoming all our pupils back on Monday 28th October as we start another very busy term.

Before we went on our October break, we decided to harvest what was left of our grapes in the polytunnel to make grape juice using a heather press. Hannah very kindly offered to come in with her press to show the children how to use the equipment and it was tough work! The boys had to work as a team and co-ordinate their efforts in order to get the most juice possible out of the muslin that was held in the press. This involved continuing to screw the press tighter and tighter onto the block beneath. Thirsty work! but all very worth it as the grape juice was delicious – very sweet and with a hint of the honey that had been through the press before. The boys are excited to develop this idea further as part of their ACORNS enterprise next year and harvest the grapes throughout the season to make grape juice to sell.
