On Thursday 24th August, pupils enjoyed a visit to the Portree Police Station where they learnt all about the roles and responsibilities of our Police Officers and had a tour of the Station and cells. The pupils were all really engaged in the experience and all had very interesting questions to ask the officers. Unfortunately, they were all arrested for ‘being naughty’ and fingerprinted! However, this was a total miscarriage of justice and they were all released on good behaviour!
We are delighted to be welcoming our four boys back for the new session – 2023/2024. This term our learning will have the following focus – Safety and Health; Science – Plants, Animals and Energy; Numeracy – Number Process, Addition, Subtraction, Algebra; Gaelic – Animals (younger pupils), School Subjects (older pupils); French – Weather; Art – Lino Print and Mixed Media; Literacy – Punctuation; Writing – Creating Texts. We will, of course, also be resuming our chanter tuition, composting scheme and eco work. The boys are currently enjoying snacks of grapes which have been growing on our vine in the poly tunnel – delicious!
We are also delighted to announce that we have been successful in our application for our fourth Eco Flag – details to follow.

For the last day of term – our P7 pupil had chosen different games that he would like to play, which all the boys enjoyed. They then had lots of fun with a very wet and foamy slip and slide – thanks to parents for setting up. The day was rounded off with our school lunch being had round the camp fire before toasting marshmallows and having a final water fight! Wishing him all the best as he starts a new journey at High School.
On Tuesday 27th June, Raasay Primary held their annual Prizegiving. This year’s special guest was Norma Young, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for this area. We were delighted to be joined by friends, family and community members to celebrate the boys’ successes over this session. We had a lovely afternoon with tea and cakes – with a special cake for our P7 leaver made by our school cook, Ann. The other boys then read out a poem that they had written as a celebration of him and his time at Raasay Primary. We all wish him well as he moves on to High School.
Raasay Primary School pupils enjoyed at Shinty session with Ruth Gordon, Shinty Development Officer. This was an opportunity for children to get familiar with all the basic shinty skills at the Astro turf at the High School. The boys really enjoyed it and we are looking at organising more session with Ruth over the coming session with also the possibility of her visiting Raasay Primary for some shinty workshops.
Pupils were learning the art of lino printing – they had to think about their design before carving it out using the various tools. The artwork was then printed from the lino sheet.
Pupils in Raasay Primary School were delighted to be awarded the certificate for the top school in the UK (under 19 pupils) taking part in the ‘Big Walk and Wheel’ Sustrans event earlier in the year. Pupils are proud of their eco credentials and all made a huge effort to either walk, cycle or scooter to school during the two weeks.
On a fabulous June day, Raasay Primary School pupils enjoyed a fantastic day of paddle boarding provided by the Spors Gaidhlig team. Our boys all did a fantastic job, paddling themselves from Holoman to Clachan – despite a breezy north wind!
As you can see from the smiles on their faces – they enjoyed every minute of it! A huge thank you to the Spors Gaidhlig instructors who provided such an amazing opportunity for the pupils.
On Friday 2nd June pupils in Raasay Primary School took part once again in the local Skye Mod. Pupils in P1-7 all took part in individual singing and poetry competitions with all five coming back with gold and silver medals! They also entered as a Choral group singing their own composition ‘Tobhta Fearna’. The adjudicator awarded them 94/95 points and stated
“What a lovely song and what great Gaidhlig – if you weren’t in the learner competition I would have thought you were fluent”.
The school as a whole also won the Oban Rosebowl again this year for the most points gained by a non Gaelic Medium School.

A huge congratulations to all!
Pupils in P6 & 7 undertook a residential visit to Edinburgh from 15th to 18th May. Pupils had a full itinerary which included a visit to the Scottish Parliament, Dynamic Earth, Camera Obscura, Edinburgh Castle, the Museum of Scotland and Greyfriar’s Bobby – there was also time for some leisure activities such as Bowling and the Edinburgh Ghost Bus! At the Parliament, pupils enjoyed an educational tour of the building and were also delighted to meet with their MSP, Kate Forbes who took them to her office where they had a meeting to discuss local issues which were important to them. All agreed that this was a fantastic experience and the boys were commended for their excellent and responsible conduct at all times – and, if you are ever in Edinburgh – they highly recommend Bertie’s Fish and Chips!
On Tuesday 30th May, pupils in P1-3 went on an outing to Dunvegan Castle and the Giant MacAskill Museum with a stop off at the Misty Isle for a delicious fish and chip lunch. The weather was absolutely beautiful and pupils thoroughly enjoyed their day. We were given lovely feedback that, as always, Raasay Primary pupils represented their school perfectly with beautiful manners and being cheery, polite and helpful at all times. The highlight for Eachann was ‘finding the keys in the Castle’, for Alexander it was ‘exploring the gardens and seeing the salmon in the river’ and for Harrison it was ‘being in the dungeon’.
