Coastal Birds Project

Working in collaboration with Elgol Primary School, pupils will be working on an RSPB project identifying coastal wild birds. They have been learning how to identify bird species by their characteristics, recognising their individual calls and studying their habitats. Online live RSPB workshops will be taking place each Monday for the next few weeks. Pupils will have the opportunity to engage with RSPB Officers in relation to the project and there will be a variety of learning activities set by the RSPB for the project. Pupils will also get the chance to be out in our local environment to study the birds that we have here on Raasay.

Northern Lights Art

As part of their Viking Art pupils have been learning about the Northern Lights – what causes them and what the Vikings thought they were.

The northern lights are caused by electrons being blown out by the solar wind. These tiny electrons mix with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, which makes them glow.

The Vikings believed that the lights were the reflection of the shields and armour of the female warriors — also known as the Valkyrie — who were immortal, or that it was the Bifröst Bridge that led those who fell in battle to their final resting place in Valhalla.
