Pupils in Raasay Primary and Nursery enjoyed taking part in Red Nose Day activities for Comic Relief. There were lots of fun themed games and challenges – rounded off by a ‘Nose and Spoon’ race!!
A donation of £30 was sent to Comic Relief from the school.
As part of our HWB and Literacy with a focus on reading for enjoyment, pupils were delighted to have a visit from Freya, our school pet. The boys read to Freya in our newly developed library. This has been her second visit as part of Pet Therapy and how we look forward to choosing a book for her next visit planned for the new term. Thanks to Catherine Travis Timms and Freya for their visit.
On Tuesday 4th March pupils made pancakes for ‘Pancake Day’. Pupils had to carefully follow the recipe and use their Maths skills in weighing and measuring ingredients. The boys did a fantastic job of flipping their pancakes and then enjoyed the results – with toppings of their choice!
Pupils at Raasay Primary School undertook Heartstart CPR training with representatives from the Lucky2Bhere charity. They also learnt how to use a defibrillator.
We are delighted that we are now back in growing season and receiving our weekly veg box from Raasay Walled Garden. Our pupils are very fortunate to have delicious, home-grown veg which is not only very healthy for us but also saves on food miles – a win, win!
On Wednesday 12th March, Artair from Gaelic Community Learning visited the school to lead a Gaelic Drama workshop. The boys were tasked with designing their own flag using elements of Gaelic. This was a wonderful opportunity for the boys to use some of their Gaelic learning in a creative environment.
On Tuesday 11th March, our P5 pupil attended the Inter-Schools Basketball Festival in Portree. This is an opportunity to develop team sport skills as well as a chance to make friends and connections with pupils from other schools across the ASG.
On Friday 7th March, pupils undertook a STEM workshop with Murray from the Science Skills Academy. The theme was Robotics and Mathematics. The boys were thoroughly engaged with the activities and were able to use their Maths skills to further develop their understanding of Robotics.
As part of their topic ‘People Who Help Us’, Nursery pupils visited the local Fire Station where Fire Fighters David and Ethan Carslaw showed the boys the Fire Engine and some of the equipment they have to use.
Nursery pupils have also visited the local Nurse, Shop and Post Office to learn about the jobs people do in our community.
Thank you to all who helped facilitate these visits.
As part of their ‘Space’ topic, pupils had the opportunity to have a Teams meet with Space Scientist Dr Gilles Baillet. This was an amazing opportunity to talk directly to someone who is currently working in this industry – Dr Gilles sent this resume about his career:
“I’m in the field for the past 15 years, sent multiple spacecrafts in space. Now I am responsible for In-Space Manufacturing (3d printing space systems directly in space) at the University of Glasgow but also work on planetary exploration (from Venus to Uranus) and small spacecrafts called CubeSats which is the speciality of Glasgow.
I am originally French from Britanny but moved in Glasgow 5 years. I’ve been working all over the world from Taiwan to NASA in California but I do believe Scotland is the best place for Space. We have fantastic engineers and innovators, especially in Glasgow which is the city outside of west coast California which manufactures the most Spacecrafts in the World. And in Scotland we also have a unique capability to manufacture and launch our own rockets from Orkney and maybe soon from North Uist in the outer Hebrides. Finally, I would like to stretch that you do not need to be good in maths or science to be working in the Scottish space industry, people in the industry ranges from lawyers to managers.”
Since Dr Gilles was responsible for 3D printing in space, Calum Gillies kindly agreed to bring in his 3D printer (which is the same model as used in the space station) and the boys were able to print a ratchet tool from the template sent by Dr Gilles and which they have printed in space. The boys enjoyed learning about the 3D printer and also saw examples of what Calum had used it to produce. Finally, they were able to print an ‘airfix’ style kit of the rocket Apollo 5 which they put together for themselves.
