Raasay Primary School

Pupils at Raasay Primary School shared their favourite books and authors with each other and also designed and decorated their own World Book Day t-shirts.

On Tuesday 12th March our P7 pupil attended the Skye Schools’ annual Basketball Festival. Pupils from across Skye and Raasay came together for a Basketball tournament – this is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to experience competitive sports with children of their age group from across the schools.

As part of their World War II topic, pupils have been learning about rationing and the types of foods that would be available to people during the war. One of the recipes they tries out was ‘floddies’ – a type of potato cake. Pupils researched what recipes would be used and, as part of their writing lesson, wrote out the recipe and followed it to make the floddies. All agreed they were delicious and some were going to try making them at home.

Another busy Community Kitchen this month and, again, pupils helped to serve the delicious soup and pudding lunch. This is a lovely opportunity for all ages to get together and enjoy some company and good food. Thank you to all who work so hard every month to put on this event.

Pupils were delighted to be resuming their chanter/piping tuition with their new tutor, Angus MacPhee. This was their first session with Angus and they are very much looking forward to the coming weeks. Tuition is mostly done online but the boys were delighted to meet Angus in person on his first visit to the school on Friday 15th March – which happened to co-incide with Red Nose Day!

Pupils at Raasay Primary School were delighted to be involved in helping to decide on the latest Raasay Film Club event. Artemis, Pupil Council Chair, had a meeting with pupils to discuss what film they would like and what snacks to serve at the interval – Artemis then fed back to the film club organisers. On the night, pupils helped to prepare for the event, welcome the customers and serve the snacks at the interval. All thoroughly enjoyed the experience – and the film! Thank you to all involved!

Pupils were delighted to have a visit from their Community Police Officer, Kirstin Logue. Kirstin presented a Powerpoint presentation on ‘Stranger Danger’ where pupils had to identify the risks presented in each scenario. Kirstin was very impressed with the knowledge and common sense displayed by the pupils – she also commented on the very interesting questions posed by the pupils in the Q & A session. Finally, pupils were fingerprinted and a crime sheet completed as part of a crime spree by the ‘Raasay Rascals’ gang! We hope to welcome Kirstin back to the school next term where she will undertake an ‘Online Safety’ session. A big thank you to Kirstin and we look forward to seeing you again next term.

Scott O’Hara, STEM Engagement Officer from the Science Skills Academy visited the school on Thursday 22nd February to undertake a workshop on ‘Energy’. The module focused on: ‘What is Energy – gaining an understanding of the different types of energy, how energy is generated and used in the home and how appliances can waste energy: Building a Battery – using cola battery cells, measuring the voltage generated and figuring out how big their battery would have to be to power a lightbulb: Circuits – pupils were challenged to build a circuit to create a number of appliances and experiment with the components to create their own appliances. Pupils were thoroughly engaged with the activities and our thanks go to Scott for a very informative and engaging workshop.

This month’s Community Kitchen Lunch had a last minute change of venue as the hall was out of commission due to work taking place on the doors. The lunch ladies pulled out all the stops to make sure the lunch went ahead – at very short notice, they moved the whole operation to the Distillery and provided a fabulous, delicious lunch as usual! Pupils from Raasay Primary School once again donned their ACORNS aprons and helped the ladies serve and clear the tables. A huge thank you to all the ladies for their hard work and efforts to make the lunch a success – and a big thank you to the Raasay Distillery for accommodating us all at very short notice. The Raasay community at its best!

We are delighted that Rosemarie West has very kindly volunteered to do some art workshops with the pupils as part of their World War II topic. Pupils are very engaged with the work and are learning various techniques using a variety of media.
