Treoir Project

Pupils will be working with Anne Martin and Cailean MacLean over the next few weeks as part of the Treoir Project. The project is part of the ‘Year of Storytelling’ and pupils will be learning about how people on Raasay lived in the past. Their first fieldtrip was to the ruins of the settlements at Fearns where pupils studied the ruins to understand how people lived and what challenges they faced. They noted that the best preserved ruin was that which was used as the shop.

Beach Clean

On Saturday 5th February, the Raasay Eco Warriors took to the shore line below Creagan Beaga to carry out a community beach clean. The children were tasked to design a poster advertising the event as an after school club last month and pupils, parents and community members met up on a somewhat wet and windy Saturday to clean up an area of the shore line. This is the second of what will hopefully be many beach cleans going forward.

Many thanks to all the volunteers for their fantastic efforts to keep our island beautiful!

School Sign

Last term the children got creative with Kate after school and created a colourful sign which would greet visitors on entering School Park. We think you will agree that it’s very jolly and certainly brightens our day. Huge thank you to Kate and Nelly for organising these workshops with the children after school. We are currently awaiting new signage from Highland Council who are in the process of following this up.

Space Haggis!

For Burns’ Night 2021 – Simon Howie, Scottish Butcher celebrated by sending a Haggis into Space! This year they marked the one year anniversary of this event by holding a competition to design a Space Flight Badge. Schools from all over Scotland took part and our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. You can see lots of the entries on their website http://www.thescottishbutcher.com and we think that our pupils designs stood out as being very bold and creative. The pupils had to stick to the brief of only using 4 colours and including the name of the butcher and the Space Haggis wording on the badge. The website also included some science experiments to complement the activity and pupils were challenged to drop eggs from a height using certain materials provided: newspaper, a balloon, string, tape, plastic cup and straw. Each item had a cost and the winner was judged on not cracking the egg and the lowest cost involved. Pictured below are our entries for the Space Flight Badge.

Christmas Lunch and Party

On Tuesday 21st December pupils at Raasay Primary School had their Christmas Lunch and Party. Our amazing cook, Tekela produced an extremely delicious turkey dinner which was thoroughly enjoyed by all! So much so that there weren’t many left overs for the ‘left-over pie’ that Tekela was planning for the next day’s lunch. Lots of fun was had with various party games including ‘Wrap the Teacher’, ‘Christmas Corners’ and, of course ‘Pass the Parcel’.

Santa and Mrs Claus were treated to Christmas poetry, Christmas jokes and a Christmas sing song out in the school grounds where they had a special ‘COVID-safe’ Grotto! Thank you to Santa and Mrs Claus for stopping by.

Children in Need

On Friday 19th November, pupils came to school in spotty/dotty clothes in support of the annual Children in Need event. They also took part in the online Joe Wicks Workout which included some general knowledge questions. At their Pupil Council Meeting, pupils decided to donate £25 (£5 per pupil) to the appeal from their Acorn Enterprise fundraising efforts as part of their charity focus. This brought the final total raised to £72.33 – well done to all, a fantastic total!

The Highlands Support Refugees Online Lesson

On Friday 19th November, pupils had an online presentation from Hannah Sutherland from The Highlands Support Refugees. Earlier in the month, the pupils had produced posters to support the campaign and Hannah was so taken with their work that she asked if she could come along (online) to talk to the pupils about who refugees are, what challenges refugees face and what countries they might come from. The pupils had lots of very interesting questions for Hannah and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
