Cross Country

The Skye Schools’ annual Cross Country event took place this year on Tuesday 14th May at the beautiful setting of Armadale Castle grounds. Thomas and Nelly did a fantastic job of representing the school and all that training on the ferry path paid off! Luckily the weather was kind to us this year with a stunning, sunny day – well done to Thomas and Nelly and all the other competitors.

Candle Making

As part of our Enterprise for the Craft Fair, pupils were busy making beautiful, scented soy wax candles. They each designed the decoration for the votive and chose scents from various scented oils. The results look amazing – so make sure you pop along to the hall on Thursday 30th!

Canoeing and Kayaking

On Friday 17th May pupils took part in an activity afternoon with Raasay House. This is part of their Interdisciplinary learning where children have the opportunity to experience a sense of achievement through participating in outdoor adventure within our community through carefully planned activities. The activities have been organised to support topic work in other areas of the curriculum, specifically learning about Raasay and Scotland.  It also supports and encourages pupils’ appreciation of the importance of looking after our island environment for work and play and to value the experiences offered and their impact in pupil confidence. It also looks a lot of fun! As always – thank you to Raasay House for organising and running a fantastic session.

Gardening

Before the Easter holiday, pupils planted courgettes at the Raasay Walled Garden. We were delighted to see the amazing growth in the plants when Kate brought them in last week and pupils will be planting them out in our polytunnel soon. The pupils will also have the opportunity to attend some after school gardening sessions in order to get our planting for the season underway. They will be planting tomatoes, lettuce, rhubarb, spring onions and herbs.

Big Battery Hunt

Raasay Primary School has signed up to take part in the ‘Big Battery Hunt’ which is the UK’s biggest battery recycling programme.  Last year it managed to recycle 4 million batteries. We would like to encourage people to think about the importance of recycling. The challenge is to collect as many used batteries as we can and recycle more than ever before! Pupils have already started bringing in used batteries from home and, if you would like to help, then please drop off used batteries at the school, Raasay Stores or Raasay House.

Craft Fair

Pupils are preparing for the local Craft Fair – due to take place at the Community Hall on Thursday 30th May. This year, as part of their Enterprise, they have been making Beeswax wraps. These are a fantastic alternative to plastic bags, wrappings and clingfilm and are, therefore, very environmentally friendly. As you can see, they also look fabulous!

Birthday Wishes!

Another birthday, another cake! We were delighted to wish Tabby ‘Happy Birthday’ this week. Nelly, very kindly, brought in a cake for Tabby which she had made by herself – complete with beautiful decoration and crystallised edible flowers. Needless to say the cake didn’t last very long – it was so yummy!
