Coronation Ceilidh

On Friday 5th May, pupils at Raasay Primary School invited community members to a Coronation Ceilidh. This was a chance to celebrate the upcoming Coronation of King Charles 111 – and also to unveil our memorial bench to Katie MacKay, who served as school cook in the school from 1967 to 1990. Katie passed away last year and is fondly remembered by the community and especially those who enjoyed many of her meals throughout their school days. We were delighted that so many of Katie’s family were able to join us on the day. A wonderful afternoon tea was laid on by our wonderful Parent Council (with the help of some former parents!) and with some wonderful baking donated by community members. The pupils produced a ‘100 Square’ with some lovely prizes donated by local businesses – the profits from this will be going towards the P6/7 Edinburgh trip and the P1-2 end of term trip. We were also joined by Anne Martin, Gaelic singer, who accompanied the children singing their Gaelic song ‘Tobhta Fearna’ which they wrote in collaboration with Anne and the Treoir project last year. Anne also sang some Gaelic songs, some with Raasay connections. Thanks also to our piping tutor Eddie who, very kindly, came along to make the day extra special with some wonderful piping to welcome our guests and as the bench was unveiled. After the event, pupils were presented with a Coronation mug and badge as a memento of the day.
