After reading a story ‘The Making of Milton’ where a young boy loses his courage and a mysterious stranger gives him a ‘jar of courage’, pupils made their own ‘jars of courage’. They had to identify areas in their lives where courage was required – they came up with a list which included such things as: attending events off the island, performing in the Christmas show and tackling new skills in Maths. Here they are decorating their jars.
After learning about the meaning behind Shrove Tuesday and the traditions of Pancake Day. Pupils enjoyed lots of fun making yummy pancakes. Alexander had honey on his pancakes for snack time, others tried out syrup, fruit or lemon and sugar.
Pupils continued to learn about chemical reactions which take place under certain conditions. They discovered how salt can change from crystal format as it is dissolved in water and, although it is still there, it cannot be seen. Pupils learnt that, by the process of evaporation, the crystals will be left behind as the water evaporates. They also noted how coins can lose their dull coating and be restored to shiny metal by immersing in vinegar.
And finally, pupils enjoyed having fun making their own ‘volcano’ eruption by adding sweets to a bottle of fizzy cola! They learnt that adding the sweets helps gas to separate from the water and form big bubbles which forces the liquid out of the bottle.
Younger pupils were using standard and non-standard units for measuring capacity and length. They were solving capacity problems using the skills of estimating and were experimenting with different containers. Older pupils were converting between different units of length – mm/cm/m/km and researching the relationship between metric and Imperial.
Younger pupils were learning about the work of artist Wassily Kandinsky and using inspiration from that to create their own artwork. Pupils were learning about mixing colours and how to create secondary colours by mixing primary colours. They also experimented with tints and shades – mixing colours with white to create tints. As you can see they produced some very striking ‘tree’ artwork using the coloured circles they had created. Older pupils studied the work and techniques of Paul Klee.
P.E. this term is focusing on basketball skills in the lead up to the Basketball Festival for P5-7 in March. Pupils were learning how to control the ball, feeling the weight of the ball as it bounces and controlling the bounce. They were also practising passing and finished off with shooting some baskets.
As you all know – it was Valentine’s Day this week and at Raasay Primary School we learnt about St Valentine and children created their own hand-made cards and gifts for their loved ones.
We were delighted to welcome PC Nina Zielke to the school on Wednesday 13th February. PC Zielke is our liaison officer and very kindly came to give us a talk about E-safety and how to stay safe online. We will be having another visit from PC Zielke next term.
Pupils in P2-7 attended a British Heart Foundation Heartstart Training event in the hall on Thursday 7th February. Pupils all received training in basic First Aid and CPR. Pupils also learnt how to put someone in the recovery position and all received a certificate for successfully completing the course.
As part of science lessons, pupils used lemon juice to make their own invisible ink. After writing their messages and drying the ‘ink’ they then saw the chemical reaction taking place after heating it up to reveal the message.
Pupils also experienced how liquid turns to gas and travels through the air. Perfume was sprayed at one end of the classroom and pupils timed how long it took for the scent to reach the other end – 30 secs.
