K’next Generation

As in previous years, we were delighted to welcome Ann Larkham to the school to deliver the K’next Generation workshops. These workshops employ active learning to develop problem solving, communication, teamwork and critical thinking skills and offer an engaging and challenging way to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Enterprise.

This year, the challenge for P1-7 pupils was ‘Parasport Challenge’ where they had to design, build and test a racing wheelchair. The winning ‘wheelchair’ was built by Noah and Nelly – pictured below with their gold medals! The pupils really enjoyed this workshop with some of the pupils reporting back that they thought this was the best K’next workshop ever!

The next workshop ‘Under the Sea’ was for Nursery to P3 pupils. They had the opportunity to learn about, draw and build sea creatures out of Knex. Tamsin took up the challenge creating a whole ‘family’ of Tamsin fish! Calum created an octopus, inspired by the example provided. He also went on to create ‘Louie the Lobster’. Hamish created his own moving sea monster which had an ‘octo’ theme. Thomas and Noah showed excellent team work skills as they went about creating their own giant sea monster. They were thinking carefully about how they could get their sea monster to stand on his own two feet. So they had to carefully consider the balance of the design!

Feisgoil

Feis nan Gaedheal’s Feisgoil delivers language, music, arts and cultural services to schools, local authorities, public bodies and community groups across Scotland. The objective of the ‘Learn Gaelic at School’ programme is the retainment and attainment of the Gaelic language through active learning. In addition to having the opportunity to learn the Gaelic language from a fluent Gaelic speaker, pupils also have the opportunity to learn about the heritage of the Gaelic language locally and nationally. We welcomed to the school Coinneach Rankin who will be visiting us over the next few weeks to deliver the workshops. Coinneach was very impressed with the level of Gaelic shown by the pupils on his first visit. Below Coinneach is pictured with the pupils enjoying some of the activities provided.

Cross Country

On Tuesday 2nd May P4-7 pupils took part in the annual Skye Schools’ Cross Country event in Portree. As you can see – the sun was shining for us and it was a perfect day to be outdoors. The pupils, as always, were fantastic ambassadors for our school and participated very well  – even finding time to make some friends along the way!

Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust

On Thursday 27th April Nursery – P7 pupils had the opportunity to attend workshops on the ‘floating classroom’ the Silurian which berthed alongside the pier. The 90 minute workshop was led by expert marine biologists and educators and began with a treasure hunt around the boat, providing an insight into life aboard the vessel. The pupils were introduced to some of the key Hebridean whales and dolphins before going out on deck to learn how to scan for dolphins and use equipment such as binoculars. The session was followed by an interactive presentation below deck in the science station where sounds, videos and props were used to demonstrate the importance of sound in the marine environment. Finally, pupils had the opportunity to feedback and ask some final questions before receiving their ‘Silurian Scientist’ certificates. Raasay Primary School would like to thank all involved for providing such an inspiring and memorable experience – as you can see from the photographs and comments below the pupils had a wonderful time! If you would like to find out more about the trust you can visit their website on http://www.hwdt.org

“I loved all of it but my favourite part was listening to the sounds the whales and dolphins made” Tabitha P5

“I liked being strapped to the mast!” Thomas P3

“I enjoyed learning about the life of a volunteer” Ethan P7

Happy Easter

Before we broke up for the Easter Holidays pupils enjoyed a fun Easter egg hunt which involved finding eggs and fluffy chicks from the rhyming clues! What a surprise when ‘Polly’ the Easter lamb also turned up for a visit – Polly was rescued from Fearns on the day of the Poly tunnel opening – hence her name! Pupils had a great time feeding her and being chased around the garden.

Parents also attended the afternoon to learn about our new website which went ‘live’ today.

Happy Easter to all our parents, friends and community members – school re-opens on Monday 24th April.

Poly Tunnel Open Day

Pupils in Raasay Primary school recently participated in the Highland Council’s Carbon Clever Challenge which was organised to celebrate 10 years of the WWF’s Earth Hour. The pupils’ entry was a short film, highlighting the importance of taking responsibility for the planet by reducing C02 emissions. As a result they decided to film their very successful composting scheme which has been operating in the school for the last year whereby pupils with parental and community support, collect and weigh food waste from neighbouring houses and businesses which is then composted and used in the school garden. They record the data and over the next ten years the projected reduction in our carbon footprint from the project will amount to 17.5 tonnes. “We were delighted to hear that our project had received excellent reviews from the Climate Change team with the video being screened in Eden Court, Inverness as part of Earth Hour on 25th March and due to the special commendation the children received certificates in recognition of both the project and the short film with McTavish the Earth Hour Panda taking up permanent residence with us here at Raasay Primary School. I would like to congratulate pupils, staff, parents and wider community for the success of the project as a whole.” Wilma Duncan, Head Teacher

Over the course of the coming years, the school hope to produce lots of fruit and vegetables in the garden that have been nurtured using their own local compost. If you would like to view the pupils award winning entry – please search in Youtube by entering Raasay Primary Earth Hour Challenge.

The Big Pedal

We even managed to rope PC Stone. our school liaison officer, into our Big Pedal Challenge! He did very well but we still managed to out-cycle him!

Raasay Primary School signed up to the cycling challenge ‘The Big Pedal’ run by the charity Sustrans. This is the biggest two-wheels challenge in the UK and over 100 schools in Scotland have signed up. The aim is to get the largest proportion of pupils, parents and staff to scoot and cycle into school over the two week period. In order for all the pupils to be able to take part in the challenge – we set up our own circuit within the school grounds. Our aim was to try to clock up 100 miles over the 2 week period which would be the equivalent of cycling to Inverness. The pupils, however, have more than taken on board the challenge and the total miles cycled so far is approximately 190 with one week still to go! We’ll calculate our final destination based on the total miles after the two weeks. We will keep you updated as to how we get on once the challenge is complete. Well done to all the children for their commitment to the challenge.

STEM

On Wednesday 8th March, Nursery to P7 pupils at Raasay Primary School had the opportunity to take part in some STEM outreach sessions organised by the UHI and Portree High School Science Department.

Senior pupils from Raasay, who are currently in S6, came into school, with Mairi Stewart, the UHI Science Outreach worker, and delivered workshops which included Sphero programming and coding using binary language.

All pupils also got the chance to meet ‘Meganoid’, the robot, and give him instructions. ‘Meganoid’ was built by Ross Camilli and was voice activated – the pupils had a lot of fun giving him directions to follow.

All pupils received a Crest Star Award Certificate in recognition of the work undertaken in the workshops.

The workshops were exceptionally well organised and delivered by Gabriel Carslaw, Connor Ellis and Ross Camilli. Pupils had the opportunity to apply a vast range of skills and learn new ones in a fun and engaging way.

The parents of the S6 pupils had the opportunity to come in to school to see first hand how the workshops were delivered and to share in the success of the project.

As a result of the success of the day, two of the S6 pupils hope to deliver an after school coding club after they leave high school in May, during the summer term.

“Our pupils here in Raasay Primary thoroughly enjoyed the STEM workshops delivered in partnership with the UHI and S6 pupils from Raasay. We were delighted to invite back our former pupils who led the workshops in a fun and inspiring way. We hope to open up further opportunities in the near future and are looking forward to working with the UHI as part of our ‘Week of Work’ event in May.” Head Teacher Wilma Duncan
