Our Carbon Clever Movie

On Monday 13th March, Seonaidh MacKenzie from BBC Alba, came to our school to help us with our submission to the Carbon Clever Earth Hour Challenge organised by Highland Council. The brief was to produce a short film (very short!) of 20 seconds which had to carry a strong Eco Message relating to sustainability and our responsibility to our planet. We decided to make our film based on our All Weather Gardening Project in order to share the message to a wider audience. We spent the day ‘on location’ in and around the school, at the shop and at the beach before returning to class to edit the shots. We were delighted that both the project and the film were featured on BBC Alba news last week and we have had great feedback from across the region. Our entry received a ‘Special Commendation’ and we were also awarded £100 from the Highland Council Climate Change Department. We have decided to re-invest the money by buying a solar powered water feature for our pond. This will keep the water oxygenated which will help plants and wildlife around the pond.

We hope you enjoy our short film which can be viewed on the link below. Also below is a link to the All Weather Gardening Project powerpoint which we update throughout the year.

Weaving

This term Raasay Primary School pupils have had the opportunity to undertake weaving workshops with Lilian MacLeod. This is a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to learn the skills involved in weaving as well as some of the weaving terms used in the industry. To date they have undertaken three workshops during our’ Creative Friday’ afternoon sessions and from the pictures you can see the commitment and concentration shown by all the pupils involved. As they develop their skills it is hoped that the children will try out different looms for different purposes. We will keep you updated on our progress through the monthly newsletters. We are grateful to Lilian for giving of her own time to share her knowledge and skills and we look forward to continuing to work together over the coming months.

The Big Bird Watch

img_2352 img_2353 img_2354

The School took part in the RSPB ‘Big Bird Watch’ this week. Our special bird hide in the garden came into its own as we used it to observe all the birds around the garden. We had already been feeding the birds and making sure that there was plenty to attract them to our school grounds. We all had survey sheets to complete and used our binoculars to help us to identify all the different species. We collated our information and then entered it online to the RSPB database. We found lots of different birds were visiting the garden – the most common were: blackbirds, robins, sparrows, chaffinches and blue tits.

Star Awards

At Assembly on Wednesday 8th February all pupils in P1-7 received a ‘Star Award’ for their excellent work in maths. We have been focusing on how to apply different strategies within maths and all pupils have gained a knowledge and understanding as to how we can apply different strategies for different maths problems. This is the first time that a star award has been presented to all pupils during assembly (usually one child receives the award for their achievements over the week). Congratulations to all – keep up the good work!

Skype Call

img_2346

This week we made our second Skype call to Tamsin in Norway to find out all her news. It was really exciting for us to catch up and hear how she is getting on. Tamsin has been following some of what we are doing in Nursery and shared it with us. We look forward to calling again next week.

Burns’ Day

To celebrate Burns’ Day, we did lots of activities. We learned lots of interesting facts about Robert Burns and listened to some of the songs he wrote during the day. Some of us hadn’t tried haggis before and tried it for the first time! We used colourful card to weave into tartan and created some thistles made from card and tissue paper. P4-7 played the tin whistle to ‘whistle in’ the haggis and we all recited ‘The Selkirk Grace’ and address to the haggis.

Filling The Raised Beds

The Gardening Club were busy on their first session of the new year filling raised beds with seaweed, manure, soil and compost in our new poly tunnel. It was great fun preparing the beds and we are really exciting about thinking up recipes with our favourite fruit and veg.

Community Lunch

Community Lunch 18.01.17

On Wednesday 18th January, pupils from Raasay Primary School and Nursery were invited to attend the Community Lunch at the Hall. This was an opportunity for the whole school to be spend some time with community members and to enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by the Lunch Club ladies! The pupils enjoyed helping to serve the lunches and then having the chance to socialise with the other members was a lovely experience. At the end of the lunch, pupils presented their Powerpoint Presentation  ‘Raasay Primary School and Nursery All Weather Gardening Project’. All the pupils from Nursery to P7 clearly detailed the project’s aims and the collaborative work undertaken to date. Thank you for inviting us and thank you to all those who gave us some lovely feedback which we hope means that we will be invited back (fingers crossed!).

Below is a slide from the presentation and some photographs of the day. If anyone would like an e-copy of the presentation or would like more information about the composting scheme, please contact us at the school.img_2298
